What is Coasteering?

Coasteering involves travelling along the line where the sea meets the land known as the intertidal zone. You’ll be in and out of the water scrambling, climbing, and traversing your way along the water edge, swimming across pools & plunging into the ocean. You could very well head inland from the cliff, exploring narrow gullies and sea caves.

Common features in coasteering routes include scrambling, climbing over rocks or swim- walking through gullies & caves. You might also get to experience features created by the tides like sluices, whirlpools and pour-overs.

Meet The Team

The idea for Over The Edge was hatched while bobbing about off the cliffs of Orkney one Sunday morning by our two Coasteering Lead Guides Steven & James.

With 20 years of experience exploring the Orkney coastline from the water we decided that it was very selfish of us to keep the places we have discovered to ourselves.

Both Lead Guides can be found in the water all year round as they map out new coasteering routes, water features, Jump Zones & new sea caves to name but a few.

We believe that everyone should experience a coasteering trip due to all the amazing benefits, excitement & peacefulness that every coaster brings. You will have sore cheeks from smiling!!!

Swapped a boilersuit in the Oil & Gas world for a Wetsuit in the North Sea!!
I was first introduced to Coasteering in 1990 when my Dad took me to St Ninians Isle when living on Shetland & been I’ve been hooked ever since.

My three children have been brought up swimming rivers, cannyoning, cliff jumping & coasteering from the age of toddlers with the adventures we have had making memories that last a lifetime. The confidence, team building & leadership skills they have developed from these experiences is very evident.

The feeling when coasteering is extremely difficult to describe due to how awesome it is but I believe it’s the best in the moment experience possible & after every trip the feeling of being re-earthed is most definitely a thing.

Signature Move – Big Bear!
